We used the factory whistles and the trains to tell time.
Then the post office went into the center of town, but first it was in the front part. Also that front part (where the Hess is) was the Ford dealer. They sold Fords out of the front. I think it was a Spangler that sold cars up there. Now he only had one (new one) and some used ones sittin around, but that one new car when they would bring it in everyone would be up there lookin at the new Ford that had come in. So we did have a new car dealer in town.
And also about 3:30-4 o’clock the whistles in York would blow I guess it was the wire cloth, you could hear that if the wind was blowin. So if you were down at the ball diamond playing ball at 3:30 or 4 o’clock you would know what time it was - so it was time to head home.
Usually we weren’t playing ball at that time, we would play it at 1 in the afternoon and then we would play it if it were a good hot day about 2 o’clock, 3 o’clock or we would go over to the railroad tracks and go down to the swimming hole until the train went by or the whistles, usually the whistles because everyone came home from work and about a half hour later it was supper time.
And you didn’t miss supper. If you missed supper there wasn’t a refrigerator to get in, so you had problems. So we didn’t have to say a second time that we didn’t hear it.
NEXT: Before York Water we had a wooden water main that ran from Forge Hill
